Lunar Finally Releases on Modern Platforms

Recent years have seen numerous re-releases, remasters, and remakes of classic JRPGs. This has been a boon for fans of the genre as the original releases tend to be both hard to find and quite expensive to acquire on the secondhand market. The Lunar Games is one series that fans have eagerly requested be rereleased for years. Lunar: the Silver Star and its sequel Lunar 2: Eternal Blue were both originally released for the Sega CD in 1992 and 1994 respectively. These games were lauded for their excellent writing, lovable cast of characters, and approachable yet deep battle system. These games also showcased the potential of CD-ROMs for gaming with excellent, high-quality music and beautifully animated anime cutscenes. They are considered among the best RPGs of the 16-bit era if not of all time. Lunar 1 and 2 would both receive enhanced ports to the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation in the mid to late 90s, with Silver Star receiving additional versions for the Game Boy Advance and Sony PSP. However, all of these versions are either exclusive to Japan or have become incredibly expensive, with prices going for well over $100 for most versions. Thankfully a remastered collection of Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete was recently announced for modern platforms and is due to be released in the first half of 2025. Additional details about this rerelease are sparse, for example, it is not clear if the English release will be using the original Working Designs localization or if the developers will opt to re-translate the games. Nonetheless, this comes as welcome news for those who wish to experience these classic titles without breaking the bank.
